"Bolinas sculptor Tom D'Onofrio recalls the moment vividly: he
woke up at 6 a.m. on Jan 19, 1971, and turned his radio to KSAN, the
local underground station. Just like any other day. There he heard
announcer Dave McQueen tell of a huge slick of oil heading toward
Bolinas.....went and jumped on my horse and I could smell the oil
before I got to the cliff (at Agate Beach)."D'Onofrio told The
Light this week. "

Tom D'Onofrio is quoted giving the inside story of the historic
Bolinas Oil Spill of Jan 19th 1971, and his critical role as the
first responder, designer and leading supervisor of constructing
The Boom, a string of 40 foot logs across the Channel between Stinson
and Bolinas Beaches, which served to hold tons of straw in place
to filter out the incoming million gallon oil slick caused by two
Standard Oil tankers colliding under the Golden Gate a few hours
earlier at midnight.
Working under the knowledge that the tide was going to change in
four hours, he immediately initiated a critical "telephone
tree" calling all local residents to the beach( and this was
in the days before 911 and cell phones). Delegating supervisory
responsibilities to a hand-full of contractors who showed up at
his first call, they directed hundreds of volunteers digging massive
holes in the beach sand on the Stinson and Bolinas sides of The
Channel, and soon thereafter burying big logs to anchor the cable
holding the string of logs, while simultaneously moving additional
40' logs into position to be utilized in the construction of the
log boom itself across the swift moving outgoing tidal channel between
the two beaches. It was dangerous work and a truly heroic effort.
Residents from both communities selflessly formed diverse work groups
that were held together as if they were a single organism by their
shared altrustic desire to save their beloved lagoon, the largest
bird sanctuary on the west coast, and home to hundreds of seals
and millions of micro organisms. Adrenalized by the impending shift
of the incoming tide, every person present that day knew intimately
that the tide waits for no one.
Its an untold story of how thousands working together, as untrained
volunteers, finally succeeded against impossible odds. The residents
of Bolinas and Stinson Beaches furiously labored, fueled by adrenalin
and their endorphins pumping, to successfully defended their precious
lagoon from an indescribable ecological disaster. The power of alturism
in action.

creature in the waves off the Northern California coast.
KGO-TV, the local ABC news affiliate for the Bay Area, ran a story
on the 30th anniversary event organized by Mr. D’Onofrio. The
